Project Description

Jupiter Island Dream Home

After spending many winters renting homes on Jupiter Island, the client, a semi-retired New York couple, decided to buy a piece of property on which to build their own Florida home. The property they chose borders the Intracoastal Waterway and is a short walk from the ocean beaches. The house we designed for them has abundant natural ventilation that allows the house to stay cool without air conditioning on all but the hottest days. For the husband, an avid cigar enthusiast, we designed a private office separated from the house by a breezeway. On top of the office a shady verandah provides a spot to watch the boats pass by.

The project incorporated many sustainable features including a custom stair and kitchen cabinets built of rapidly renewable Lyptus wood, tankless water heaters, high performance windows and building insulation, and a roof drainage system that diverts rainwater to irrigation and a groundwater recharge grid.

The project was completed in only nine months in spite of some of the strictest codes and regulations in the country.
