Project Description

Locust Valley Modern

The home of a boat captain, this modern house was designed by the noted architect John Hejduk, former Dean of Cooper Union. The landscape design respects and enhances the architecture of the house by defining a formal courtyard with a tranquil reflecting pool and a pedestal for the owner’s sculpture. To keep the design simple and modern, the low walls and paving are of uniform bluestone, while the courtyard plantings are panels of a single species of ground cover. An irregular border of plantings at the rear conceals the property border and uses the “borrowed landscape” to make the property feel bigger than it is.
